The Making of The Star Wars Lego Death Star 10188

When building normal lego sets the instructions recommend sorting the pieces into colours on a large work surface, however with 3803 pieces we decided to go hardcore and just empty all the bags into one container.

The lego inside the bags do no coincide with the build, they are totally random, and even completing the minifigures took a while!

The instructions also recommend counting the pieces with the key given, however with so many pieces, and all the bags unopened we decided to trust the people at lego.

The instructions are for age 12+ however they are step by step, and each page only has a small number of blocks to build, and shows where to put them. The majority of the blocks are grey, dark grey, and black and it does take a while to identify which the instructions relate to, and we did make some mistakes in the early stages.

Once the initial shock of how many pieces there really were, the Death Star started to progress nicely.

Making of Lego Star Wars Death Star Day 1

Having watched Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope several times we were actually amazed at how much detail was on the Death star, and each room related to part of the film.

By day 5 we had completed the ground and first floors and had just started on the main floor. The trash compactor was truly awesome with a lever to open and close the doors, and the firing laser cannon actually fired a projectile.

Day 6 was a continuation of building the walls and with 24 minifigures, time for a sneaky play!

The Detention block was built on day 7 along with the Emperors throne room, and the Tie Starfighter hanger bay.

Day 8 was spent building the Death Star Control Room and the powerful Death Star superlaser. Again we were amazed at how much detail was put into making all the parts.

Day 9 was the start of the third and final floor where the moving turbo laser turrets, Imperial conference room, and droid maintenance facility were to be built.

With the finishing touches done on day 10 and a relief that we had not used the wrong pieces, the Death Star was completed!

The Star Wars Lego Death Star although quite expensive is worth every penny. The scale of it is truly awesome, and making it was definately addictive. My only concern would be if you buy it as a Christmas present, don’t expect to build it in a couple of hours!!
