Making of Lego Pirates of the Caribbean The Black Pearl 4184

The Pirates of the Caribbean The Black Pearl Lego Set 4184 is the iconic ship from the fantasy-adventure films Pirates of the Caribbean captained by the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow, but most of the time Captain Hector Barbossa!

It took 3 hours to complete the 804 piece Lego set, however it was much easier than the previous set we have tried to make Star Wars The Death Star due to Lego changing the build method.

In previous large Lego sets the pieces were randomly put into bags and your were advised to clear the table and stack the pieces by colour, this of course took quite a while, to the annoyance of eagerly waiting Lego builders.

However with this set the pieces were in order and you were told not to open bag 2 until you had completed the the instructions which are very easy to follow. Each bag held about 125 pieces so they were quite manageable.

The one slightly annoying thing was that there was one minifigure in each of the six bags so you couldn’t build them all first as in previous Lego Sets.

This Black Pearl features large black sails, firing cannons, a pirate flag, anchor and turning helm, and also includes an opening cabin with detailed interior which looks really good. The back sail is on a removable base plate so you can easily play in the cabin.

The dimensions of the ship measures over 53cm long, 50cm tall and 12cm wide and although the set says ages 8-14 if you are a confident builder the only help you will need is adding the sails which can be a bit fiddly.

This Lego set includes 6 minifigures Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Joshamee Gibbs, Davy Jones, Maccus and Bootstrap Bill, and I was a bit dissappointed that it did not include the other main characters Captain Hector Barbossa and Elizabeth Swann.

The Black Pearl gets a 4.5/5 as it looks amazing as a display piece and it is easy to play with no parts falling off. The reason for not giving it top marks is that the photograph on the box shows 2 cannons on one side so you assume the set has 4 cannons in total. However it only has 2 which are movable and for the price you would of expected Lego to put the extra 2 in!
